Wheat stem rot is a global wheat disease. First reported in Australia in 1951, it has since spread widely across several major wheat-producing regions, including the United States, Canada, Italy, South Africa, Argentina, Turkey, Egypt, Syria, and Iran. In China, since its first report in 2012, wheat stem rot has rapidly spread in key wheat-growing areas such as the Huanghuaihai region, becoming a significant threat to wheat production. This disease is both widespread and harmful, leading to substantial decreases in wheat yield and potentially producing toxins that affect grain quality, as well as human and animal health. However, wheat seed coating can effectively prevent and control both seed-borne and soil-borne diseases.
